Vivekananda Cultural Centre

Year

2025

Gross Floor Area

2700sqm

Scope

Architectural Design

The Vivekananda Cultural Centre is conceived as a porous cloister within the tropical city, where light, proportion, and climate shape spaces for reflection and gathering.

A simple grid promenade links key programs and courtyards, providing generous and continuous shelter for visitors — referencing Swami Vivekananda’s planning principles for the original Belur Math temple. Water forms a central element, with a rooftop reflective pool descending gently into the courtyard below. This gesture reflects Vivekananda’s analogy of rivers converging into a single ocean, expressing the unity underlying diverse religious paths.

The massing responds to topography and time, considering how architecture may become a cultural legacy for the community over the next fifty years. The proposal then drew inspiration from a 200-year-old oil painting depicting a landscape where Man’s respect and admiration for Nature is expressed through the composition and forms of his sacred structures, set against a mountain backdrop and a tranquil lake in the foreground.

We imagined this scene playing out a quiet tune of secular harmony and spiritual hierarchy.
