Situated in a quietly depopulating rural region of Japan, this low-cost nursery school is designed to serve a small number of local children with warmth and simplicity.
An honest structural system using locally sourced timber defines the open interior, offering both spatial generosity and adaptability for future reconfiguration. The design emphasises natural light and connection to the surrounding landscape: north-facing verandahs and strategically placed skylights gently illuminate the nursery rooms, framing serene views of the forest beyond.
Managed by a local temple, the project adopts the modest scale and materiality of traditional architecture in the region. While respectful in its overall composition, moments of playfulness are thoughtfully integrated — encouraging curiosity, engagement and joy in daily use.
